Chester has evolved over the years from its origins as Maidu Indian territory to a settlement of cattle ranchers to a logging town. This small, northern California town doesn't have the biggest range of tourist attractions, but its serene lakeside atmosphere, opportunities for outdoor recreation and historical and cultural interest make a visit worthwhile.

Explore the town's history as it evolved over the centuries by visiting the Chester-Lake Almanor Museum The main attraction at the museum is a collection of photos that create a virtual time line of the town's past. Displays of Maidu artifacts, antique dairy and cattle ranching equipment and other items also are available. Enter a replicated 1940s sawmill and learn about the history of the area's logging industry at the Collins Pine Company Museum. The museum's courtyard is full of antique logging equipment, including some logging trucks dating to the 1930s. Guests may view a short film on the history of logging and check out other industry artifacts.
Lake Almanor West Community Club
Hit the links at the Lake Almanor West Community Club for a casual, scenic game. The views of Mount Lassen in the distance provide a relaxing atmosphere that makes players give pause to enjoy the scenery. The fairways rise and fall lightly enough to give the course some texture without making your game overly challenging and unpredictable, but the wooded areas offer opportunities for risk-reward type play. Practice facilities, including a driving range and putting green are available near the clubhouse and pro shop.
Lake Almanor
Chester sits on the western shore of Lake Almanor, a prime fishing and hunting location. The lake has a reputation for providing fishermen, casual and competitive alike, with opportunities for catching salmon and trout. Visitors may fish off the shores or use one of the lake's boat ramps to launch a vessel and fish in deeper waters. The area around the lake has scenic spots for picnicking, trails for hiking and prime spots for hunting duck, geese and deer mule when in season
