Phonsavan is the capital of Xieng Khuang province, around halfway between Vientiane and Luang Prabang. Phonsavan has steadily developed into the most important gateway town to the Plain of Jars. Most tourists only visit to see the Jar sites, however for those with more time the Xieng Khuang Plateau affords great natural beauty and its byways and villages are well worth exploration.

Plain of Jars
The Plain of Jars is an intriguing archaeological site deep in the mountains of Xieng Khouang. The Plain of Jars has a bizarre collection of mysterious antique stone jars scattered across the countryside. The jars are presumed to be one of the oldest archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. The origin and purpose of these jars is still shrouded in mystery.
In 1930’s French archaeologist Madeleine Coloni, did an extensive study on the jars. According to the research made the plain of jars were created by a civilization that thrived between 300 BC and 300 AD. Artifacts collected during the study included bronze and iron tools, bracelets, cowry shells and glass beads, supporting the hypothesis that these were funeral urns carved by an extinct Bronze Age people.
