The Royal St. Charles Hotel was initially built as the Southern Federal Savings Bank in 1990.
The Royal St. Charles Hotel was named based on its location near where Royal Street and St. Charles Avenue intersects on Canal Street. Known as “neutral ground” by the locals, Canal Street separates the European-settled French Quarter from the Central Business District or CBD, where Americans first settled. So note to self: The same street is called a different name depending on which side of Canal Street you are on.
