Pyin Oo Lwin was originally founded under the name May-town or Maymyo after Colonel May of the 5th Bengal Infantry in 1896 and was designed as a hill station to escape from the heat of nearby Mandalay, becoming the summer capital until the end of British rule in 1948.
Pyin Oo Lwin is around 90 minutes from Mandalay. Popular excursions from the Hill Station include a train ride over the Gokteik Viaduct, which was the largest railway trestle in the world on its completion in 1899. The easy stroll to the summit of Mandalay hill affords stunning panoramas across the city of Mandalay and the surrounding countryside.
