Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador

Port aux Basques is a town on the southwestern tip of Newfoundland,Canada. It is the terminal for car ferries across Cabot Strait from North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and is the connecting point for the 570-mile (917-km) semi-circular final stage of the Trans-Canada Highway to St. John’s (east).

With over 300,000 people visiting the community annually, Channel-Port aux Basques is a hub of tourism activity for Newfoundland and Labrador. Because of this high visibility, the South West Coast region has a multitude of offerings for any traveller.

Take a hike through the trails, allow the light of one of the lighthouses to guide the way, catch some rays on a beautiful beach, or be guided by one of the world’s rarest navigational aids of the 1500’s at the museum. There are plenty of places to see and things to do on the South West Coast!

In Port aux Basques fishing and fish processing are local industries. A monument commemorates those who died when the ferry Caribou was torpedoed in 1942 during World War II while en route from Nova Scotia. The town was incorporated in 1945 when Port aux Basques was merged with nearby Channel.
