Rwanda is one of East Africa’s smaller countries but is a treasure box filled with a wide range of adventures for the true naturalist. The high point is of course the mountain gorillas found in Volcanoes National Park. You can also find golden monkeys and chimpanzee in Rwanda. The hills, valleys and lakes provide spectacular landscape for visitors. Rwanda’s capital city is Kigali. With its varied elevation, it has earned the nickname “city of a thousand hills.” There are a number of hotels in the city offering accommodation of a high standard. There are also several activities and excursions available. A visit to the Genocide Museum is a “must do” for many visitors.
Volcanoes National Park was the very first park to be gazetted in Africa, located in north western Rwanda and adjacent to Virunga National Park. The park’s attractions include wildlife, plants and volcanic features. It is home to endangered mountain gorillas and other animals such as buffalo, spotted hyenas, golden monkeys and bushbucks. Viewing the gorillas is often said to be the highpointof a travellers’ safari.
Nyungwe National Park lies in southwest Rwanda, partly abutting the Burundi border. It is a vast area of mountain rainforest, home to many species of chimpanzees, plus owl-faced and colobus monkeys. The Canopy Walkway, part of the Igishigishigi Trail, is a high suspension bridge with views over the valley and surrounding forests. A trail runs to the Kamiranzovu Marsh, with its bird life, orchids and waterfall.
