The ruins of Anuradhapura are a unique Sri Lankan experience and offer an illustrative insight into one of its former kingdoms. The widespread complex contains a plethora of archaeological and architectural wonders, including impressive dagobas (basically a brick stupas), ancient pools and disintegrating temples, constructed at various stages during Anuradhapura’s 1000 years of rule over Sri Lanka. Today, several of the sites remain in use as holy places and temples giving the feel of a living museum.
