Beruwala is believed to have been the first Moorish settlement on the island, established by Arab traders around the 8th century AD. Ethnically diverse, a large population of Sri Lanka Moors, many of them gem traders, still live in this area, particularly in the “China Fort” district.
The working fishing harbour provides a splash of colour and an early morning visit can afford a view of the local fisherman landing their catch. Alternatively just relax in your hotel, and enjoy the beach or indulge in an Ayurvedic Spa treatment
