Torrey Experiences

Below is a small selection of the tours we can organise for you when you have booked your USA holiday with us and are visiting Torrey and the Capitol Reef National Park.

Duration: 5-7 hours
Group size: 2 - 12
Location: Capitol Reef National Park + Bentonite Hills
Roughness of Road: 2.5/5 - Semi-maintained dirt road with rocky sections, dry wash crossings, river ford. Subject to change based on weather.
Bathroom: Vault toilet halfway through tour

If you have one day or afternoon to experience Capitol Reef National Park, this tour is for you.

The Cathedral Valley is the more rugged option of our Jeep tours. We venture into the remote northern district of Capitol Reef, driving a 110 mile loop that takes 5-7 hours to complete. The National Park Service recommends this route normally be undertaken by high clearance 4×4 vehicles; few park visitors witness the spectacular landscape that is the Cathedral Valley.

We’ll see massive rock towers the size of skyscrapers, alien moonscapes, epic vistas ripped right out of a western movie, weird crystals, a giant sinkhole, and lava formations. Iconic sites like the Temple of the Sun and Moon, Glass Mountain, and the colorful Bentonite Hills are visited on this adventure.

Highlights
Temples of the Sun and Moon
Glass Mountain
Walls of Jericho
Gypsum Sinkhole
Cathedral Mountains
Epic cliffside overlooks of the Cathedral Valley and South Desert
Queen of the Wash
Bentonite Hills and River Ford OR panoramic views and aspen forest on Thousand Lake Mountain.  *Depending on length of tour desired/subject to road and weather conditions
Add-Ons
Sunset departure
Sunrise departure
Private yoga class
Additional jeep
Extra time and overnight campin

Duration: 2-3 hours
Group size: 2 - 12
Location: Capitol Reef National Park
Roughness of Road: 1/5 - This tour is on the paved scenic drive with short, well-maintained dirt roads to Grand Wash, Capitol Gorge, and Pleasant Creek
Bathroom: Frequent vault toilets throughout tour.
Tour Description
If you’re looking for a relaxing and brief trip into the park, this tour explores the scenic drive and Historic Fruita area, the most popular section of Capitol Reef National Park. We’ll make sure you see the park’s highlights and a few of our secret spots with an experienced guide sharing their local knowledge on the geology and history of the area.

We’ll drive down the paved scenic drive and into the canyons of Grand Wash and Capitol Gorge, with an option to take a short walk to see the historic inscriptions and petroglyphs.

In the morning we can stop for delicious, homemade pies at the Gifford House, during harvest season we can pick fruit in the orchards, and an evening tour can include a short hike to one of our favorite sunset spots!

If you want a longer tour of the scenic drive area with more hiking, check out our Capitol Reef Classics guided hiking tours.

This is an excellent option to see the “main” part of Capitol Reef if you’re in a large RV, or you don’t want to worry about traffic and parking while trying to find the highlights.

Add-Ons
Sunset departure
Private yoga class
Additional jeep

Duration: 1-2 Hours - You're free to leave early or stay at our stargazing location after our program ends
Number of attendees: Minimum of 6 - maximum of 30
Location: Capitol Reef National Park
Bathroom: No facilities available, make sure you go before we leave!
We provide: Chairs, hot drinks, blankets, telescope, guides.
Tour Description
This tour takes place inside Capitol Reef National Park at our quiet, “secret” spot. It is natural, exceptionally dark, and provides an immersive experience and clear view of our night sky.

We meet at the parking lot of the Rim Rock Inn, near the lobby about an hour after sunset. We’ll confirm the meeting time with you that day based on weather and clouds forecast. Please arrive on time, we can’t make everyone attending wait for you, our location in the park can be hard to find and cell coverage will be unreliable. You will not be given a refund outside of extenuating circumstances. Plan your dinner and travel arrangements accordingly.

After everyone has checked in, you’ll follow us in your own vehicle to our stargazing spot. You will have to drive about 1/2 a mile on a maintained dirt road, usually suitable for even sports cars to drive on (when affected by weather, we will shuttle you from a paved parking area to our location.)

We’ll keep you updated the day of your tour on any weather or cloud forecasts that may affect our stargazing program. We’ll confirm the tour prior to departure. Tours may need to be pushed back or rescheduled to another day.

We provide 100% refunds if canceled due to weather.

Good to know
A minimum of six bookings are required for program to proceed. Should that not be met, you’ll be given the option to purchase the additional “seats” or be given a full refund.

We cap our tours at 30 people. We do bring additional guides and telescopes to make sure everyone gets a chance to see the night sky and enjoy our program.

There is no bathroom at our location, so make sure to go before. We are prepared in case of emergencies, but there is little cover for you outside of the darkness.

If you want to see one of the best Milky Ways in the night sky or learn how the Moon affects our program, we highly recommend checking out our stargazing guide and FAQs  and calendar to help plan your trip.

Duration: 4-7 hours
Group size: 2 - 12
Season: Late Spring through Fall - the only guided hike usually offered in the summer!
Difficulty: Moderate - 6 miles
Tour Description
The perfect hike to beat the heat! Sulphur Creek is one of our favorite hikes in the park, but most people never have the opportunity to hike it because they lack multiple vehicles for the shuttle and the experience to tackle it’s obstacles. It’s also the best hike for the summer, the water is so cool and refreshing!

We’ll be hiking 6 miles one way down a narrow canyon with huge walls and running water (mostly ankle deep), climbing past waterfalls, wading through sections of deep water (water levels change by season), and sliding down a cascade into a natural pool as a glorious finale.

This point to point thru-hike requires a shuttle or hitchhiking for hikers tackling this trek on their own, which we provide.

You will get wet and scramble down 10-15 feet drops, but our guides will be there to help you tackle any obstacles. This is the closest Capitol Reef equivalent of the famous Narrows in Zion, but without the crowds.

Currently the deepest water you must hike in is thigh deep, but conditions do change throughout the year.
